The Minecraft Creeper In My GitHub Contribution Graph

You might be wondering, “Did I read that right?” The answer is probably yes, you did, though I can’t say for sure that you didn’t misread it; maybe you ought to double check it if you’re not so sure. But yes, I drew a MInecraft creeper face in my GitHub contribution graph. Well, not exactly on my main profile, but I created an alt account on GitHub specifically for this project. The process took 56 consecutive days (8 weeks) to draw a 7×8 creeper in the contribution graph, and I managed to do it almost perfectly. (I did make a commit a little late in the day, causing a bug in the contribution graph to surface, partially ruining the final product.)

It all started with a meme I made a while back where I used inspect page to create a creeper face in my GitHub contribution graph. I don’t have that image anymore, since it’s on an older computer I don’t use anymore, but I did set it as the account’s profile picture, so I do have a partial image of it:

One day, I decided I would actually try and make this dream a reality, so I made a new account, which just happened to be on the first day of the first full week of the year, officially starting the process strong. It could have easily been a Tuesday, which would’ve ruined the graph, since GitHub counts creating an account as a contribution for your graph.

I made this blueprint outlining how many commits I had to make each day to draw the creeper face perfectly. It couldn’t just be randomness, since I based the intensity of the colors in the image on the actual creeper face texture.

I set a reminder on my phone every day at around noon and again, in case I forgot, in the afternoon, so I would remember to log in, check the blueprint, and make a few commits. One day, late into one of the last couple weeks, I committed after 6 PM central, which is after midnight UTC. While the graph still shows those commits were on that day, the intensities of the colors (based on how many commits were made each day) changed as if I had made more than 4 commits the next day. Instead of having a color for 1, 2, 3, and 4 commits, it now displays as if 1=2, 2=3, 3=4, and 4=4. Fortunately, the average person won’t notice this issue.

So what did I do in my 83 (83, not 84, because the 1st was just joining GitHub) commits? I slowly over time added more content to my profile readme, corrected typos, and, when I couldn’t think of anything to add or fix, added random content that was removed in the next commit.
