Day 14 of my Journey to Using no AI
Two weeks ago today, I decided to start slowly using less and less AI until, after a month or two, completely blocking myself from any form of generative AI for non-work related purposes. (and since I’m currently unemployed, that’s all purposes. Here’s how I’m doing in that journey now.
Lately, I’ve started to forget about this attempt to stop using AI. However, yesterday, I saw a YouTube video about how a bunch of AI agents, unprompted and fully aware they were acting unethically and against instructions, escaped containment and hacked a real-world company, and how there have been multiple similar instances since. AI is getting too powerful and hard to control. This has reinforced my will to stop using AI for good. As of today, I will try to use AI strictly only when I cannot accomplish my goal without AI and have tried for a while to accomplish my goal without the help of AI.
I know this is overkill, but the way things are going with AI, I really think AI should become illegal. If I could tell myself from 5 years ago one thing, it would be to stay the heck away from AI at all costs. It’s addictive. It’s manipulative. It’s out of control. And using it as a crutch deteriorates your skills and mental abilities, your ability to think for yourself, perform logic on your own, and be creative. It’s also incredibly wasteful on resources and energy.
